I'm EA8BVP, Bal, from Gran Canaria (temporarily). Congrats for your website. I enjoy your SOTA activations videos very much too.
I've been watching your portable setup and I have some questions.
- How much RF power do you use with your IC706?
- Do you use any balun (air coil, toroid, ..) in the ladder line to RG213 transition?
- What MFJ ATU are you using?
- How many Ah has your battery?
Thanks in advance and hope to contact you soon on CW

Comment n°2 : Hi Bal, many thanks for your interest...
For SOTA operations, I use about 30W because summits in SW France I activated were very low (except 2-3). Up 600 meters ASL, you can use QRP 5-10W without any problem and will work all EU depending of the propagation.
The dipole antenna is a Mini-G5RV (see http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/hamwire/0185.html) 2 x 7,5 m. which have a weather-proof coupler to connect your coaxial.
The tuner is a MFJ-971 (manual) and the battery is a moto one, about 9 Ah...
CU on the bands !
Chris F8DZY.
Thanks for your reply. I think that you meant G5RV-Jr, not Mini-G5RV because MiniG5RV is 2x3.88m (half of G5RV-Jr) for 20m and up.
Mercy again, and hope to contact you on bands.
un saludo.

This is the G5RV Junior (but I call it mini) and works 40M to 10M (except 15M) and also on 80M !! (see CQ WW DX CW 2008 article).
Merry X-Mas & HNY 2009 Bal !

73 QRO,
Chris F8DZY.
Thanks very much for your blog. It's always interesting to have a look at it. I enjoy SOTA stories very much.
I have a question about your antenna:
What kind of vertical are you using at home?
How tall is it?
How do you tune the vertical on differents bands?
Well, they are really three questions :)
I'm using a similar setup here, but I have put a 4:1 balun at the feedpoint. My vertical is 5m high.
Merci.
---
72 de EA8BVP, Baltasar.
Here the vertical is an ITA OTURA wich is 7.5m height with 1:9 balun.. It is completely on the ground without any radial !
I am working like "this" because I am in QRA location for one year during new QRA construction and don't want to set up anything bigger here.
For a vertical, it is recommended (when possible) 48 radials 0.6 x lambda (QRG) : with this set up, your vertical will get db (0.1 to 3.4 with 120 radials !) instead of no gain at all under 48 (as a vertical antenna). (Thanks F6DDR infos)
I tune it directly from my IC746 rig easily from 40 to 10M, more difficult on 80M with full power.
If you have intention to invest in a vertical, I strongly recommend you IT9ZMX antennas, Vittorio will soon become very known with his verticals : my future one will be HF2B (20,5m height) for 160/80M (see "F8DZY's project"), or HF3B (13,5m height) for 160/80/40M. Have a look on Google for this...
Hope this helps you
For info, new SOTA video soon online here...

Thanks for your reply. It seems that your ITA-OTURA is working perfectly. I knew about that antenna from Hervé, F6HIQ. He has
one and works very well too.
I think that it isn't difficult to homebrew one. There are some similar antenas like:
http://www.g3ejs.com/files/antennas/qrpshortwire.pdf
http://www.iv3sbe.webfundis.net/html/Rybakov806.htm
http://www.oe5.oevsv.at/basteln_js/technik/afu_betrieb/antennen/koppler/oe3reb/qsp1003_s60.htm
I have a little terrace here in my flat and I can only put that kind of antennas. Condx have improve lately and I'm very lucky to have worked some DX here.
I also tune my antenna with my TS480SAT internal tuner. I get SWR 1:1 in all bands, but who knows what is it efficiency :)
I also plan to change QRA in a short time, so I hope I will be able to put better antennas there like you.
I've been looking at F6DDR website. There is very useful information there. Many good ideas. The HF2B and HF3B seems very good antennas too.
I look forward to your next SOTA videos.
I hope to contact you on bands in CW or digital modes.
Merci.

HI

Sorry for delay with answer : I was in Paris for my job...
Yes, we have Eva who is already 3 years old and now Mathis 3 months "old"
Hope to work you a day with Gert (a long time now...)
Chris F8DZY.
I wish you all the best with the new house.....at my house in the Limousin i have a good setup, big loops and antennas for 160m thro to 70cm....here in Estillac i have nothing and no chance of putting anything up !!! Dommage
Good luck...73 Adrian F5VLY
I just put an ITA-Otura vertical in the garden here at the moment, not "taking place" and discret for neighbourhood... a simple dipole would have been ok if it permits me to be QRV ! HI
73 QRO de Chris F8DZY.
Have a 3 ele yagi for 14/21/28 plus yagis for 50mhz and 144mhz but have not got round to putting them on the pylone!!!!
Will try to bring down my gear and try to operate /P from the van!!! better than nothing !!
My Girlfriend works in your village near the Intermarche, we live about 3 minutes from each other !! HI
Have only got VHF gear here at the moment...which is hard for me as i am a 'CW' man like you ( i use Benchers and an old ETM German key)....not very often i operate on SSB...
Will have to do a 'deal' with you to operate CW from your station !!! will buy you a beer...
A bientót Adrian
My pleasure to meet you a day... 73.
Chris F8DZY.
L'aspect "isolation" m'a retenu.

Thanks for your visit & comment... The QRA should be delivered in April 2010, then I'll have to put the pylone with the Cubex Quad, a 1/4w vertical for 30M, and the vertical 40/80/160M with 48 or 120 radials of 20m. each... (hard job)
See you on the bands.
Good JOB!

Bonjour Denis, merci beaucoup.

HELLO CRIS, AND THANK YOU FOR VERY placed on your beautiful site MY PHOTOS AND OUR QSO in 10 meters.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ACTIVITIES 'IN RADIO, AND I HOPE IN OTHER GOOD BARGAINS.
Just wanted to know, WHAT YOU GET RESULTS WITH YOUR NEW VERTICAL ANTENNA 40/80/160 OF MY FRIEND MAURO IT9ZMX ?
I think that will buy 'too HI HI.
WELL AND STILL A cordial embrace SOON ON AIR. 73 DE JOSEPH (JOE) IT9RZU
Hi Giuseppe,
Thanks for your visit & comment on the guestbook !
I just had the time to test the HF3B for the CW REF contest (before changing QRA), and I had very good results on 80M & 40M (read my articles on REF CW 2010), about 160M, I just tested a little time and got TK5EP & RN3GM/2 on my first calls, but 160M was not really open at this period...
I didn't have any radial at the beginning, then tried with some to get a lower SWR (which was really acceptable anyway), and now, in my new QRA, I will put 48 x 48 meters radials at the end of the year when I will put the HF3B again, in order to have the best results possible with this vertical.
I am quite really happy with its results compared to the price. You should be very happy with it too !
Ciao Giuseppe...
Chris F8DZY.

Hello Chris,

Would like to have some more contacts with you,

Hi Jean, thanks for signing the Guestbook !
Unfortunately, I moved from my previous QRA close to the Pyrénées mountains (SOTA F/PO) for another region more in the north 2 years ago... so no more summit to activate here
But it's not impossible I bring my equipment a day, visiting the mountains...
